Does anyone have an idea for paving a weird walkway in my front yard?

Question by benandjerryluvr: Does anyone have an idea for paving a weird walkway in my front yard?
We are trying to figure out how to "pave" a bare dirt walkway in our front yard. It's a 1/4 circle curve which starts out at 7 feet wide close to the house ( just outside the front door, after the step) and tapers to 5'4" at the driveway, and is 40 feet long from top to bottom. We have just seeded a lawn on both sides of it and ordered perennials and ferns for flower beds along the length of the house, but no longer have a budget for the walkway. Any ideas for something attractive yet cheap ( or better yet, FREE! ;) ) would be greatly appreciated. We have decided NOT to use wood chips because we have carpet right inside our front door. With five children in and out all day as well as twins that crawl around and pick things up off the floor, we felt that this was not a good option for us. After searching the internet for weeks to give us ideas, we're stumped. Would LOVE the input of others. We're in Southern Utah, if that helps at all
forgot to mention.. this is a rental house. Obviously, we don't want to put TONS of money into something that we aren't planning on staying in. Also ,the landlord is not giving us ANY credit for work or materials, neither has he PAID for anywork or materials. This is all on us... we couldn't handle the clouds of dirt in our faces every time we got a breeze from the bare dirt yard that WAS there.

I can understand why you do not want to use wood chips... Do you know what your most common local rock is? A lot of times you can slide a dump truck driver $ 50-100 to stop at your house with a load of gravel. I understand that it is not free, but still pretty cheep.

I would consider small gravel or crushed stone 3/4 of an inch and smaller. It really works well and is less likely to wash away or be tracked into the house. It is usually pretty cheap and is easy to spread and level. We have it in the area between our house and garage and behind the garage where the shade is too deep to let grass grow. It is all gravel.

I've seen people actually "pave" by recycling glass bottles. Dig a hole, insert bottle upside down, refill dirt around it so only the smooth bottom of the bottle is showing. Ask a local bar if they can save their bottles for you for a bit as a walkway this size would require a LOT of bottles.
You could also do the edges of the walkway with maybe a double row of bottles and use something else as was mentioned above for a filler.
